Bisque porcelain statue of Ariadne on the Panther, after the famous neoclassical design by Johann Heinrich Dannecker (1758–1841). Ariadne is depicted lying on the back of a panther. Executed in white bisque porcelain, with the model number 850 and the number 10 on the bottom. Probably produced by the Scheibe-Alsbach porcelain factory in Thuringia, Germany. Approximately 25 cm tall. Good condition, with normal signs of aging. No visible restorations or damages. In Greek mythology, Ariadne is known for her role in the story of the Minotaur, but the combination with a panther refers to her later life with Dionysus, the god of wine and ecstasy. After Theseus abandoned her on the island of Naxos, Ariadne was saved by Dionysus, who married her. The panther is the sacred animal of Dionysus. He often travels in a wagon drawn by panthers, or rides himself on the back of a predator. Ariadne, as his wife, is often depicted at his side, also accompanied by these animals. The motif of Ariadne on a panther is very well known in art history: Johann Heinrich Dannecker created between 1803 and 1814 the famous neoclassical marble statue named Ariadne on the Panther. It shows a nude Ariadne reclining on the back of a lying panther. It can be seen in the Liebieghaus in Frankfurt. In Renaissance and Baroque painting, Ariadne and Dionysus are regularly depicted on their triumphal procession, seated on a wagon drawn by panthers or tigers.
