His radical reduction of form and color, which he called “Neoplasticism,” influenced art, architecture, and design in the 20th century. Mondrian’s paintings, reduced to right angles and the primary colors red, blue, and yellow, as well as black and white, reflect a deep quest for harmony and order, similar to the works of Kazimir Malevich, whose Suprematism, in particular the “Black Square” (1915), also pursued absolute reduction of forms. Both artists sought a universal language in abstraction, with Malevich pursuing more spiritual content, while Mondrian foregrounded the harmony of composition. Mondrian’s ideas also found strong parallels in the Bauhaus movement, especially with Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. While Kandinsky emphasized emotional and spiritual elements in his abstract works such as “Composition VIII” (1923), Mondrian took abstraction to a nearly mathematical clarity. This reduction heavily influenced Bauhaus, particularly the minimalist architecture of Walter Gropius and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who, like Mondrian, sought universal clarity in form and function. Both architects drew on Mondrian’s principles of order and structure to design buildings that were both functional and aesthetically clear. The works of Gerrit Rietveld, especially his famous “Rietveld Schröder House” (1924), also reflect Mondrian’s influence. Rietveld, a close ally in the De Stijl movement, transferred the principles of clear lines and primary colors directly into architecture and furniture design, illustrating the connection between art and architecture in Mondrian’s work. This idea of interdisciplinary connections between art and design was also taken up by artists like Le Corbusier, whose “Modulor” system relied on similar harmonious proportions that Mondrian pursued in his paintings. Mondrian’s influence also extends to artists such as Yves Klein, who pursued radical simplification of color in monochrome works, and the minimalist Donald Judd, who translated the idea of reduction and pure form into three-dimensional art. Both artists picked up Mondrian’s concept of purity in art and developed it further.
