Pierre Dieulefils, a scarce and harrowing photographic postcard, the Yên Thế campaign, 1909, French Indochina, published by Pierre Dieulefils, Hanoi, postally used, Dieulefils series no. 3326, depicting the severed heads of three Vietnamese resistance fighters killed during the combat of 11 February 1909, captioned “TONKIN – YEN-THÉ – Têtes de pirates de la bande de Huinch tués dans le combat du 11 février Colonne Mayer” the image relates to the French campaign against the Yên Thế resistance associated with Hoàng Hoa Thám (Đề Thám), the reverse is inscribed ‘Haïphong 12 Sept’ 1909’ and bears a manuscript message from ‘Victor’ referring to the three men depicted: Trois de nos meilleurs camarades, contre lesquels nous combattons… ‘Three of our best comrades, against whom we are fighting…’ addressed to Madame Laye, 4 rue Humblot, Grenelle, Paris, 9 x 13.5cm
