Pierre Catton (XX) - Rue animée

Pierre CATTON (1903-?) - "Animated Alley of the Paris School" - Original Expressionist work in mixed media A captivating urban composition depicting a lively street perspective, featuring tall picturesque facades and figures near a market stall in the foreground. This work is a striking testimony to Pierre Catton's style, an artist of the Modern School of Paris greatly influenced by graphic rigor and the style of his friend Bernard Buffet. Here we find his stylistic signature: a remarkable work of thick, nervous black outlines that theatrically structure space. This powerful graphic quality contrasts superbly with the application of washes (mixed media combining ink, gouache, and touches of acrylic) which reveal beautiful variations in light. The palette harmoniously contrasts warm tones of the buildings (ochres, oranges, earth tones) with the azure sky blue and the vibrant green of climbing vegetation.
