PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUM — VIEWS OF FRANCE An album of photographs featuring landscapes, rivers, castles, and engineering structures. [France, late 19th–early 20th century]. Oblong album, contemporary binding in wine-colored chagrin percaline, covers adorned with a cold-stamped fillet border, plain spine with faux raised bands. Photographic album consisting of original prints mounted on heavy card stock and attached to tabs. The views, which are of a fairly uniform size, primarily depict French river and rural landscapes, castles and waterfront estates, bridges, dams, and hydraulic structures. Several photographs notably show a castle reflected in a river, landscapes of steep-walled valleys with a dam or bridge, bodies of water lined with trees, as well as a view of a small town crossed by a river. The collection appears to be the result of private or amateur photography rather than a commercial album: the prints are individually mounted on large pieces of cardboard with no visible printed captions. This type of album, dating from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, is now an interesting documentary source on the landscape and the private uses of photography; public collections preserve many comparable albums of travel and regional views. The exact technique is difficult to determine based on the photographs alone. The slightly bluish monochrome appearance of the prints might suggest cyanotypes or toned prints, but I would err on the side of caution in the catalog entry and simply use “original photographic prints” until they have been physically examined. Condition: binding is scuffed and stained; corners and caps are worn; some damage and weaknesses in the interior structure. The album’s pages are clearly detached from the binding, with significant play visible at the hinges and endpapers. The boards are discolored and heavily pitted in places; the photographs themselves are generally well-preserved, with some foxing and surface damage.
