PHILIPPINES. Philippines - Peru. 8 Reales, 1828. Manila Mint. Ferdinand

PHILIPPINES. Philippines - Peru. 8 Reales, 1828. Manila Mint. Ferdinand VII. NGC GOOD-6. KM-25; Basso-52; PNM#6-20; PNM#16-30; PNM#21-I-20; Cacho-CS-015. Issued by decree of 13 October 1828. Type I Manila overstrike, with serrated borders and reverse legend; dies prepared by Don Benito de los Reyes. Overstruck on an 1828-LIMA JM Republic 8 Reales (KM-142.3). This well worn example displays rich slate patina with brighter coloration on the high points. Unevenly struck, as is frequently encountered for this issue, with faint remnants of "MANIL" and bold "A" in the center of the obverse. The arms of Spain on the reverse are virtually complete only missing a small portion of the crown. Much of the host design is clear such as a full four digit date, assayers' letters, denomination, mint mark, as well as portions of the legend throughout. A wholesome example of this early dated crown of Asia and first distinctly Filipino Dollar size coin. Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500.
