A Modern Philippines Rarity! PHILIPPINES. Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. 2000 Piso, 2001. P-189cs. Specimen. PCGS Banknote Gem Uncirculated 65 PPQ. A modern rarity from the Philippines that requires some explanation. Although prepared in 2001 as a commemorative issue, none were issued because President Estrada was ousted from office that year. The notes remained in the vaults of the Philippine Central Bank until at least 2010, when most were destroyed, except for 50,000 notes made available to collectors in special folders indicating they were not legal tender. However, the small quantity of specimens Thomas de la Rue prepared for the bank was not made available at that time, and they remain extremely rare. This is the first time we have been able to offer a specimen of this type, and it is a lovely Gem Uncirculated note with bold overprints and two punch-hole cancellations. An important opportunity, not to be missed. Estimate: $4,000 - $7,000.
