Philippe-Émile Roumens (1825–1901)

Philippe-Émile ROUMENS (1825–1901) Portrait of a Bourgeois Lady holding Violets (The Pendant), 1889 Oil on canvas Dimensions: 80 x 60 cm Signed and dated "1889" in red, lower right We are pleased to present the female counterpart to Roumens’ male portrait. Painted in 1889—the definitive zenith of the French Belle Époque—this formal canvas serves as a companion piece of extraordinary refinement. Sighted with the exact same dimensions (80 x 60 cm) and execution year, this work showcases the painter's unparalleled capacity to capture the quiet dignity, inner life, and sophisticated domestic universe of high-society women in late 19th-century France. While her husband’s portrait projects civic influence and modern intellect through Le Figaro, this composition implements an alternative yet equally potent set of visual codes tailored to the domestic and social prestige expected of an elite 19th-century woman: • The Modesty of the Black Velvet Uniform: The sitter wears a tightly buttoned, high-collared dress of dense black velvet—the ultimate sartorial statement of marital respectability, virtue, and understated luxury during the Third Republic. The rigorous garment is softened by delicate white lace ruffles at the neck and cuffs, adding a touch of softness to her stately appearance. • The Cameo Brooch (Familial Continuity): Positioned prominently at her collar, the finely carved shell cameo brooch represents more than simple jewelry. In the 1880s, cameos were treasured family heirlooms signaling lineage, classic education, and ancestral continuity, anchoring her firmly within a traditional heritage. • The Violets (Discreet Sentimentalism): Cradled gently between her fingers is a small bouquet of deep purple violets. In the nineteenth-century Victorian floral code (floriography), violets symbolized fidelity, modesty, and deep affection. This attribute transforms the painting from a rigid representation into an intimate testament to her status as a devoted, loving wife. The strength of this portrait relies on a management of light inherited from the classical tradition, placed at the service of the sitter's psychology. A high lateral light source intensely illuminates the face and gaze, detaching them boldly from a dark, warm background to confer a remarkable physical presence and interiority to the subject. Roumens' brush plays precisely with texture contrasts, making the porcelain smoothness of her complexion, the delicate transparency of the lace, and the soft sheen of the velvet fabric dialogue seamlessly together. Finally, the simulated octagonal framing concentrates the space around the subject, pulling her gentle expression and hands toward the viewer to reinforce the composition's visual impact. Note to Collectors: This artwork is the direct pendant to the portrait of the gentleman with Le Figaro, painted by the same artist in the same year. The male portrait is currently available for sale separately, presenting a rare, institutional-grade opportunity to reunite this distinguished historical couple.
