Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bank of the United States (3rd). 1840

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bank of the United States (3rd). 1840 $2000. PCGS Banknote About Uncirculated 55. No. 8937. Plate None. Notes from this historically significant issuer are often represented by crude artificially-aged replicas from the 1960s. Genuine notes are rarely seen and seldom traded at auction like a distant echo of the political fracas that saw the bank's charter go unrenewed in 1836 and the subsequent liquidation process that began in the early 1840s. Notes like this one were rarely used outside of a specific context and this distinction serves to betray the grade assigned. Ample originality is likewise retained while a number of interest stamps that all predate the eventual end of the liquidation process in 1852 may be noticed on the back. No doubt that this is indeed a rare item and something to consider for the collector who the enjoys the historical and political connections readily demonstrated by often esoteric numismatic items. Estimate: $1,250 - $1,750. Click here for certification details from PCGS Banknote.
