DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK AND HISTORICAL-SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE Striking and very rare Neapolitan edition prepared by Pietro Palumbo of the Elementa Physicae by the famous Dutch physicist, mathematician and inventor Petrus van Musschenbroek. A lecturer at Duisburg, Utrecht and Leiden, Musschenbroek is considered one of the fathers of modern experimental physics and a pioneer in the study of electricity (worldwide known for the invention of the Leyden Jar). This monumental university course gathers the best of Enlightenment science, and is thus divided as follows: General Physics and Mechanics: Study of matter, the force of gravity, fluid dynamics, atmospheric pressure, acoustics and optics. Historical-Philosophical Essay (Disputatio Physico-Historica): On the origin and infinitesimal constitution of matter. Treatise on Astronomy (De Rebus Caelestibus Tractatus): A broad monographic section devoted to celestial mechanics, the solar system, planetary orbits, the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, the theory of eclipses and tides. The exceptional iconographic apparatus (31 Plates Outside the Text): The plates, engraved in copper by the famous Neapolitan engraver Filippo de Grado, offer an impressive and detailed visual repertoire of: Microscopes, telescopes and optical systems (refraction, prisms, lenses, anatomical structure of the eye). Pneumatic pumps, barometers, thermometers and instruments for the study of gases and fluids. Test benches for material strength and hydraulic machines. Famous iconography on the crystallography of snow and ice. Astronomical diagrams, solar system maps and lunar phases. CONDITION AND STATE OF PRESERVATION Binding: In excellent structural condition, full contemporary parchment binding, very solid and well preserved, with minimal and natural signs of age on boards and spines. Original flyleaves legible. Interior: Pages secure and well bound. Exhibits the physiological browning and light foxing typical of 18th-century Neapolitan paper, which do not compromise the clarity of the text. Plates: All 31 folding plates are fully preserved, well impressed and printed on sturdy paper; only a few original opening creases with very small and negligible restorations or slight age browning at the margins are noted. No loss of engraving. A complete work in every part, extremely fascinating and of great bibliographic significance for private museums, collectors and institutions of the history of science. An extremely rare work and difficult to obtain on the international antiquarian market.
