Peter Max (American, b. Germany 1937). "Lady & Zoople" mixed media painting over a color lithograph on Arches paper, hand-colored in 1993. Hand-signed below lithograph. A miniature profile head floats against a wash of cerulean, her brow crowned in yellow and shadowed by a small orange sun, a serpentine line trailing down the left margin like a stray thought. The work begins as a color lithograph on Arches paper, then departs from the edition entirely: Max has painted over the sheet in watercolor, acrylic, and colored pencil, extending the imagery past the printed plate onto the bare paper with tick marks, feathered strokes, and a looping signature-like flourish below the figure. Hand-signed beneath the lithograph. The subject belongs to the artist's long-running cast of cosmic profiles, dreamers rendered in Fauvist color, here paired with the whimsical creature-name "Zoople". Presented in a black wood frame with gilt fillet and double mat. About the artist: Born in Berlin in 1937, Peter Max spent a peripatetic childhood in Shanghai, Israel, and Europe before his family settled in the United States. He trained in New York at the Art Students League, the Pratt Institute, and the School of Visual Arts. By the late 1960s he was the defining graphic voice of the American counterculture, his "Cosmic '60s" idiom of prismatic color and floating profiles reaching a mass audience through posters, album art, and a 1969 Life magazine cover. His mature work turned looser and more painterly, moving from hard-edged Pop toward a Neo-Expressionist handling of pigment while keeping the Fauvist palette intact. Works of this kind occupy a particular niche in the Max market: a printed matrix that the artist then reworks by hand, so that no two impressions resolve the same way. The overpainting here runs beyond the plate edge onto the raw Arches sheet, a deliberate erasure of the boundary between print and painting. Item # 202108
