Penn's Grove, New Jersey. $10 1882 Brown Back. Fr. 490. Penn's Grove

Tough First Title on a Salem County-based Bank Penn's Grove, New Jersey. $10 1882 Brown Back. Fr. 490. Penn's Grove NB. Charter #5387. PMG Very Fine 20. Burdened with a name that honestly seems at home in Pennsylvania. This evenly circulated Series of 1882 $10 Brown Back is one of approximately 40 pieces recorded on the Penn's Grove National Bank (Charter# 5387) by the National Bank Note Census, but that figure is nonetheless deceptive in one regard. In 1928, this bank took a new title and became Penn's Grove National Bank and Trust Company which accounts for no less than 34 survivors out of the aforementioned figure of "40." To that end, the last auction appearance for this particular title dates back to 2018 when a $10 Plain Back brought a final realization of $3,840 amidst a much weaker market. Held against that example which was issued at some point after 1915, this example which features the signatures of Cashier John Hare, (Jr.) and President Joseph D. Whitaker is bound to realize a rather strong realization here in 2026 that speaks to the continued popularity of New Jersey Nationals. Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000.
