SIMONS Paul (1865 - 1932) "Le canal Saint-Sébastien aux Martigues" Oil on panel, Signed bottom left, Beautiful luminous work by the Marseille painter Paul Simons depicting a lively view of Martigues known as "the Provençal Venice". Along the Saint-Sébastien canal you can distinguish the church of la Madeleine as well as on the right the nets of fishermen hanging. The painter used a palette of warm colors, with pink hues that perfectly capture the atmosphere of the place. A pupil of Luc Olivier Merson and Jean-Paul Laurens, Paul Simons exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1886 to 1897. His Mediterranean landscape studies, in different tones according to the seasons and times of the day, were praised by critics. In 1902, Paul Simons was named official painter of the navy.
