"The Smell of Success" was a special, grandly organized exhibition at the Groninger Museum in 1996 (from June 29 to September 1). The exhibition and the accompanying publications focused on the unique combination of two Dutch icons: photographer Paul Huf and designer/illustrator Dick Bruna. The exhibition demonstrated the cross-pollination between Huf’s commercial/modern photography and Dick Bruna’s minimalist graphic design (known for Nijntje). Both had left a huge imprint on Dutch visual culture in the preceding decades (as Huf did with his iconic album covers, Grolsch campaigns, Philips, KLM, Magriet, Avenue, King Peppermint and Playboy).
