By placing a bid you confirm that you have read and accept our Terms and Conditions in full (auroraathena.com/auction-terms-and-conditions/). -- Three sailing boats with ochre and rust-red sails ride a harbour whose water is a carpet of blue, pink, yellow and violet dots; a white sail shimmers in the distance and a rower pulls away in the foreground. It is a joyful, entirely pointillist picture — every inch of it built from small touches of pure colour. Paul Flaubert (1928–1994) devoted his career to this neo-Impressionist idiom, painting harbours, the Seine at Rouen, Mediterranean ports and Moroccan scenes in a dotted technique that keeps the freshness of Signac while softening the figures with a smoother touch. Marines like this one are the best-loved part of his output. Signed ‘Paul Flaubert’ at the lower left.
