Fast, careful, and insured shipping. Buy with confidence! Friend of Charles FILIGER, he joined GAUGUIN at Pont-Aven during the summer of 1890 and directly received his advice. Marked by the woods of VALLOTON and RIVIERE, he executed his first engraving in 1893 and developed knife-engraving on end-grain wood. His works from 1890 to 1900 are nourished by the innovations of the Pont-Aven School and the Nabis, both in theme (sometimes religious, mythological or historical) and handling (cloisonniste). He settled in Lagny (Seine-et-Marne) from 1894 to 1911, where he practiced medicine. He exhibited with the Sagot publishing house in 1902, at the Georges Petit Gallery from 1905, and the book publisher Pelletan commissioned numerous illustrations for his works. Attached to his native region, which he would frequent until the end of his life, he drew and etched its many facets—the men working the land, its landscapes and its villages. A founding member of the Society of Original Wood Engraving in 1911, he served as vice-president from 1920 to 1935. From 1920 to the late 1930s he visited Italy and Sicily, Spain and the Balearics, Morocco, Portugal, a source of inspiration for his new approach to color.
