Pasqale Vinaccia - Chitarra liuto - - Lute - Italy - 1896

apolitan lute guitar. The label attributes it to Pasquale Vinaccia’s workshop, hence probably posthumous, since the date of his death is pegged at 1885. Upon his death the workshop was carried on by his sons Gennaro and Achille. The instrument features a beautiful harmonic top of cedar with a fine, linear grain, while the ribs of the soundbox are likely walnut, interspersed with a dark purfling. The neck and headstock are glossy black and the fretboard is ebony. Notable is the craftsmanship of the bridge and the rosette, of original artisanal workmanship, which complete this instrument that is an expression of the finest craftsmanship of those times in Italy. The sound confirms expectations, proving to be quite deep and of great intensity, with a clear and crystalline note. A guitar that has nothing to envy from the most renowned Italian-made and Neapolitan guitars of the era. The scale length is 625 mm, while the width of the neck at the nut is 43 mm. The guitar is in good condition, especially considering its age. It has no cracks or splits and no impact damage. I have personally kept it for almost thirty years, with great respect and played only occasionally; in fact there are no signs of fret wear on the harmonic top. This instrument is aimed at collectors and enthusiasts of artisanal Italian and Neapolitan lutherie in particular, as it truly represents a testimony to the excellence of production in that city. The guitar does not have a case but will be shipped with insured padded professional packaging.
