Todas las subastas / Arte Antiguo / Paper-enclosed temple lantern 行灯 (andon) - Washi-paper

An attractive tall wooden temple lantern 行灯 (andon), constructed from sugi 杉 (Japanese cedar) and finished in a warm brown tone with a particularly attractive aged patina. The lantern has a tall square form with a broad tapered base and a carrying loop handle at the top. The front is fitted with a concealed hinged door with lattice work, opening to the light chamber enclosed with newly restored washi paper 和紙 (washi). Below is a small drawer fitted with a copper chrysanthemum-shaped appliqué, functioning as the drawer pull. This was traditionally used to store matches and such. Originally intended for candlelight, the lantern has been newly electrified for modern use. Period: Japan – 19th century (Late Edo period/Early Meiji period) Dimensions: Height 87 cm, Width 37 cm, Depth 37 cm. In very good restored condition with traces of wear consistent with age. The washi paper has been renewed and the lantern has been newly electrified, while the wooden frame retains its attractive old surface and patina. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition. When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
