Paiute / Shoshone Miniature Beaded Cradleboard, Netted Beadwork Cover

Native American, Great Basin, Paiute or Shoshone, ca. 1900 to 1930 CE. A charming miniature cradleboard built just like its full-size counterparts: a bent willow frame covered in smoke-tanned hide, with a projecting hood that would have shaded the infant’s face. The hood is beaded with bands of red, green, white and black seed beads in diagonal stripes, and dramatic zigzag triangles circle its sides. The front is draped in an open-mesh netted beadwork panel, a technique strongly associated with Great Basin beadworkers, worked in vivid horizontal bands of white, red, green, yellow, sky blue, black and cobalt, each ending in a bead-dangle fringe. A small beaded cross in cobalt and yellow decorates the upper side. A cloth-wrapped figure nestles within the hood, peeking out from beneath the shade. A colorful and appealing example of the cradleboard tradition, made in miniature as a toy or for sale. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Item # 206178
