Pair of antique all-purpose cutters for betel nuts...

Pair of ancient traditional cutters for areca nut/betel (sarota), dating roughly to the 19th century, from India (Mughal Empire). The objects were used in the social and ceremonial ritual of preparing Paan. Large specimen (15.5 cm): Artistic craftsmanship with a finely pierced crest (Jali). The main pivot pin features a brass rosette/open-lotus-shaped knob. The handle’s inlay is modeled in a zoomorphic style, forming a parrot-head with a through eye. There are precious residues of the original red pigment (lac/cinnabar) in the gaps. Small specimen (12.5 cm): Characterized by rich geometric engraving in burin and superficial chiseling along the edges, with a palmette/three-petalled lotus motif. Technical Details: Material: Steel with brass details. Dimensions: 15.5 cm and 12.5 cm in length. Condition: Overall good condition consistent with age. They display a beautiful, genuine patina of time with areas of brown oxidation. Solid construction and scissor-like mechanism still functioning. Shipping method: Tracked and insured shipping via express courier, with careful protective packaging.
