Rai & Co., as per seal on the back Activity indicated on the seal: “Photographers & Enlargers” Address: Kutchery Road, Karachi Place of realization: Karachi, Sind; then British India if we confirm a date prior to 1947, present-day Pakistan Approximate dating: ca. 1930–1945, probably the 1930s Technique: probable silver gelatin photographic print on paper, originally mounted on decorative cardboard. The technique will need to be confirmed physically; by reference, the Art Gallery of South Australia catalogs family studio portraits taken in Bombay around 1940 precisely as silver gelatin photographs mounted on cardboard. Format: vertical studio portrait, large-format ornamental mount Inscription / mark: violet seal on the reverse: P. RAI & CO.; Photographers & Enlargers, Kutchery Road, KARACHI. Description: portrait of three people, with a seated woman dressed in a sari, a girl in the central position, and a man in a light Western suit. Studio decoration with a painted backcloth, furniture, and flowers. Formally composed with a family character. Condition: generally good to fair for its age. The cardboard shows wear, losses, and dings along the edges and corners, especially on the lower edge. The photograph itself shows surface wear, small marginal losses, and tonal alterations. In oblique photographs there is a shine that could partly correspond to surface deterioration or silvering, but I would not take it as confirmed without examining the original.
