Huysmans, active in Brussels from 1786 to 1800 Title: Inn by the dune landscape with travelers Dating: 1797 Material and technique: oil on wooden panel Dimensions: 42 × 59.5 cm; with frame 61 × 80.5 cm Signature: lower left, hand-signed and dated ’97 (1797) Provenance: Dutch private art collection P.J. Huysmans was active as a landscape painter in Brussels from 1786 to 1800. The painting belongs to his dated works from the late eighteenth century. Object description On the left is an inn with brick façades, thatched roofs and a chimney. In front of the building stand adults and children around a saddled horse. A wooden cart, a wheelbarrow and bound brushwood form part of the foreground. Behind the inn rises a clump of trees with branches spreading wide. A sandy road runs along the buildings and over a low arched bridge over a watercourse. Further ahead there are two walkers with a dog. The terrain consists of grassy, sandy heights and an open panorama with scattered trees. The sky is light blue, with gray-pink clouds and a pink zone above the horizon. The signature and dating are applied lower left on a painted piece of wood. Technique and material analysis The oil painting has an overall smooth surface with a detailed rendering of individual motifs. Small touches articulate the foliage; fine lines describe grasses, branches, roofing and masonry. Figures and the horse are modeled with defined outlines and local reliefs of light. In the sky, gradual color transitions prevail. A fine craquelure is present across the surface.
