This beautiful Ottoman helmet (tolga or shishak) is conical in shape, with the tip forming a flower bud. It is engraved with several registers of palmettes and half-palmettes, elaborate mandorles and friezes of fleurons. On the entire lower half of the decoration, the motifs appear in negative on a guilloche background. A Siperlikli Mi?fer type helmet (with visor), it lacks (as is often the case with helmets from this period) the movable parts that were attached to the base of the helmet: the nasal, cheek, visor and neck cover (attachment holes visible). It still retains its wide, flower-tipped fin-holder, designed to hold a large feather or horsehair. A soldier wearing a turban helmet of the same shape can be seen in an engraving by Melchior Lorck (1526/27 - after 1583). For several years, this Danish-German artist, who lived in Istanbul from 1556, produced numerous plates depicting the Empire's various monuments, customs and habits, its inhabitants and its social and military classes. Today, his works are precious testimonies to Ottoman life in the 16th century. Most of these helmets were made of steel, with calligraphic and floral decoration, partially engraved and damascened in gold. Only a small number of tolga made in tombak are known. Tombak, or mercury-gilded copper, is a technique particularly appreciated in the Ottoman world for gilding luxurious copper objects (such as ewers and their basins, or armor elements like helmets, shields and chamfers). The application of this thick gilding made these objects all the more precious. The term comes from the Malay word tumbaga, used to describe a copper alloy. - The Topkap? Palace holds three comparable tombak helmets (inventory numbers 1/1461, 1/1462 and 1/1465). No. 1/1462 is illustrated in the catalog for the exhibition Istanbul: The City and the Sultan at the De Niewe Kerk Museum in Amsterdam, published in 2006 (p. 145, no. 221). - The Metropolitan Museum, New York, also holds three tombak helmets from the same period, one of which is engraved with palmettes and arabesques (no. 1974.118). - The David Collection in Copenhagen holds one with relief gadroon decoration, inventory no. 7/2005. - In the Benaki Museum in Athens, another example in gilded copper is dated 997 AH / 1588 AD (inventory ?? 6210). - A tombak helmet is preserved in the Museum of Islamic Arts, Malaysia (inventory number unknown). - See also: Christie's London, 25/04/2013, lot n°210. One can only imagine the impact that the appearance of the Turkish soldier must have had, donning pieces of tombak armor whose thick copper gilding shone like gold bullion, as on this important helmet with engraved decoration. While copper was less effective in terms of protection (compared to the ferrous alloys of conventional helmets), tombak gave its owner a far more luxurious appearance, and highlighted his power and wealth. This is why this material was reserved for high-ranking recipients, who were less directly exposed to combat. Oriental weapons, particularly those from Turkey O
