A transdisciplinary artist, she uses photography, video, sculpture, biotechnology and surgery to make her own body her principal material. Le Corps comme carnet de dessin (The body as a sketchbook): from the 1970s onwards, she challenged codes with iconoclastic performances such as Le Baiser de l'artiste (The Artist's Kiss). In the 1990s, she produced a series of filmed surgical operations-performances in which she transformed her face to question the social pressures exerted on the female body. L'Arlequin et l'Hybridation: her work focuses on the concept of "otherness". Inspired by Michel Serres'sTiers-Instruit, she claims an identity made of cross-fertilization: between cultures, between species and between humans and technology. A technological pioneer:ORLAN has always been at the forefront, using Minitel, augmented reality, artificial intelligence and living cell culture (Bio-art) to explore what it means to be "human" in the 21st century. Winner of numerous awards (Grand Prix de l'E-Réputation, Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur), she has exhibited in some of the world's leading institutions (Centre Pompidou, MoMA, Getty Museum). Her Smart "Arlequinade" of 2026 represents the culmination of her reflections on the body-microbiota and the artist's presence in the city. The Objet-Manifeste: the Smart "Arlequinade" is not just a customized vehicle, it's a mobile social sculpture. By moving the work from the museum to the street, ORLAN pursues its mission of "taking art out of the frame". Covering doesn't just aesthetize the bodywork; it transforms it into a biological membrane. The pandemic suddenly made this microscopic world perceptible. What was once an abstraction has become concrete, tangible, in our daily gestures, our fears and our precautions. We have established a physical distance between bodies, permanently transforming our ways of being together. The artist often works at the crossroads of art and science with biotechnologies. In 2007, thanks to the Symbiotica laboratory and BioART theorist and curator Jens Hauser, she created Le Manteau d'Arlequin in Perth, a work in which she cultivates her own cells with those of other human and animal origins. ORLAN developed a reflection around the figure of the harlequin, based on the text by philosopher Michel Serres,Le Tiers-Instruit. In the preface, entitledLaïcité, the harlequin, having traveled the world gradually shedding his patchwork clothes, reveals a skin made up of fragments and traces tattooed by what he has seen and encountered. Yet he is unaware that everything he has seen has deeply impregnated, transformed and hybridized him - just as it does when we circulate, travel and cross cultures. This philosophical tale turns the harlequin into a metaphor for multiculturalism and the acceptance of the other within oneself. In 2010, for his monumental installation Un bœuf sur la langue at the Musée de Nantes,ORLANcreated in collaboration with Brochier silk establishments, a silk velvet printed with a harlequinade composed of viruses - some lethal, others, like phages, carriers of life - as well as bacteria, spores, fungi and blood, skin and muscle cells. In 2018, Fabrice Hyber invitedORLANin theORGANOÏDE project at the Institut Pasteur to create a permanent installation in the OMICS auditorium with new images representing the microbiota including the word "stem cell", "fangotherapy" "rabies", "pasteurella pestis", "vaccine", or "researcher"... In 2026, the artist reinvents this motif by customizing her car in "festive" colors to bring a singular, joyful touch to a gray city, and to fight against the standardization and stereotyping of vehicles.ORLANmakes her SMART even SMARTER! This action transforms the bodywork into a hybrid surface combining biological and symbolic signs. The object becomes a magnifying glass, revealing what our eyes could never perceive: the infinitely small. In this way, the car becomes a mobile extension of the harlequin body, a space of circulation where the traces of the living in all its complexity are inscribed. The patchwork is no longer merely textile or cutaneous, but also mechanical and social: it covers an object of movement, highlighting flows, exchanges and
