The portrait nearly fills the entire canvas. The close crop eliminates any superfluous narrative element and concentrates the view on the face, especially the eyes: green, threaded with turquoise and aquatic variations, emerging from the dark mass of hair and the warmth of the complexion. From here the title, “Yeux de mer sans horizon” — Ocean eyes without a horizon. A sea enclosed in the gaze, with no line to indicate where it ends. The painting proceeds through a precise, layered oil technique. Thin glazes gradually build the complexion, the transparencies, and the color variations of the skin; very fine brushes are used in the details of the eyes, lashes, freckles, and hair. Some areas retain a more evident painterly material, allowing the physical presence of the canvas and the gesture to be felt. The contrast between the dark hair, the reds and pinks of the face, and the almost marine brightness of the eyes defines the visual center of the work.
