Nova Scotia Hearts and Stars Deed Box

Canadian. A pine deed box in vibrant polychrome paint with painted and incised hearts and stars. Plank construction with dovetailed joints. The interior is in pale blue paint and has an inside till (lid missing); the molding is attached with square nails. Illustrated as one of three in "Spirit of Nova Scotia: Traditional decorative folk art, 1780-1930" by Richard Henning Field, plate 192, and another by the same hand is illustrated in "Canadian Folk Art to 1950" by John Fleming and Michael Rowan. Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. 3rd quarter 19th century. Unmarked.
