nose ornament casuaris bone Asmat 1970’s - otsj - Asmat...

This traditional nose ornament comes from the Central Asmat region of West Papua. The local Asmat name for this type of ornament is otsj. It is carved from cassowary bone and has the characteristic curved form of Asmat nose ornaments. Such ornaments were worn through the nasal septum and formed an important part of traditional male body decoration, particularly during ceremonies and festive occasions. The use of cassowary bone connects the ornament directly with the natural environment from which the Asmat obtained many of the materials used for personal adornment and ritual objects.
