NORWAY. Speciedaler, 1692. Kongsberg Mint. Christian V. NGC AU-58.

ORWAY. Speciedaler, 1692. Kongsberg Mint. Christian V. NGC AU-58. Dav-3659E; KM-190; Hede-37G; Sieg-59.5; NMD-168E; Delzanno-177e; Schou-13; Bruun-10394. Mintmaster: Henning Christopher Meyer, the elder. Engraver: Caspar Barth. The edge bears the following lettering: NICHT AUS SILBER-SUCHT DIESE NORDENS-FRUCHT WIRD ZU GOTTES EHR GESUCHT. ("Not out of greed for silver is this fruit of the North sought, but for the glory of God"). The edge lettering was double struck. Nice, grey cabinet toning and with considerable amounts of luster remaining. Extremely rare. The vast majority of Speciedalers struck in Denmark and Norway during the 17th century were not intended for regular circulation, but were instead produced as presentation pieces or for hoarding. However, the Norwegian Speciedalers with lettered edges are notable exceptions, with a total of nearly 100,000 minted between 1692 and 1696. Unlike hammer-struck coinage, these Kongsberg Speciedalers were produced using a screw press. Because the edge lettering was applied to the planchets prior to striking, the reading direction and starting point of the legends vary. There are seven known varieties of edge legends: five in Danish, one in German, and one in Latin. They were all designed to glorify the Danish absolute monarch and celebrate the rich silver discoveries in the Norwegian mountains around the new Kongsberg Mint, which had replaced Christiania in 1686. These extraordinarily high-flown and poetic phrases are attributed to the vicar Jørgen Kongstad. Estimate: €10,000 - €12,000. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922). Ex: Peter v. Hemmert Collection (Copenhagen - 1807) Lot # 1334. To view supplemental information and all items from the L.E.
