Exceptional Norwegian Rarity The Only Example Graded (◊) NORWAY. Norges Bank. 50 Kroner, 1885. P-3. PMG Very Fine 25. Without a doubt one of the highlights of this sale, and a rarity of the greatest importance. This 50 Kroner is from the first series denominated in Kroner, printed from 1877 to 1899. Seven different dates are known to exist, although it is possible other dates were issued. The 1885 date had a reported printing of 150,000 notes, tied for second lowest of the series after the final 1899 date, which is unknown to exist. Several recent offerings of this type (which are very infrequent) were cancelled, and uncancelled examples such as this are even rarer still. Sæthre lists this date as RRR, indicating 2-3 examples known to exist at the time of publication. This is the only example of the type certified by PMG, aside from two specimens that are far less desirable than a fully issued, uncancelled note like the piece offered in the present lot. The note shows moderate circulation, is problem-free, and shows no problems worth mentioning by either the grading service or us. One of the most important Norwegian banknotes ever offered by us, and an offering unlikely to be repeated anytime soon.
