Type of jewel: Sapphire and diamond pendant necklace with a bow motif. Condition: In well-preserved condition, especially given this necklace's age. Style: Belle Époque influence, with an openwork bow above a slender articulated drop ending in a pear-shaped sapphire. Era: Circa 1920. Material: 18K yellow gold with white-metal settings in either platinum or 18K white gold; the white metal has not been tested to distinguish between the two. Diamonds: Nineteen small rose-cut and senaille-cut diamonds. Rose-cut and senaille-cut diamonds are traditionally described by number rather than by estimated weight, colour or clarity grades. Their varying and often irregular depth prevents reliable weight estimation while mounted, while formal colour and clarity grading is not customary in the trade for diamonds of these antique cutting styles. All diamonds in this necklace were individually tested with the Magilabs' EXA Natural Diamond Detector and identified as natural diamonds. Gemstone: One pear-shaped natural sapphire with an estimated weight of 0.47 ct. The gemstone weight is approximate, as the stone was assessed in its setting and was not removed for weighing. It is common practice for gemstones to be treated in order to improve their colour or clarity. The sapphire has not been tested for such treatments. Traditional gemstone associations: Sapphire is traditionally associated with September and loyalty; diamond with April. Hallmarks: The clasp ring of the necklace is stamped ‘PLAT’.
