NN - De warachtighe fabulen der dieren - 1978

The true fables of the animals. Bruges 1567 Anastatic reprint by Uitgeverij Den Wijngaert in Roeselare, 1978 216+(6) pp, loose gatherings in a linen storage box (20.5x15 cm, signs of wear) AS GOOD AS NEW! In 1567, in Bruges at the press of Pieter de Clerck, appeared ‘The True Fables of the Animals,’ a collection of fables with 106 animal fables. The volume was both a reading and a viewing book: each fable was accompanied by an engraving by the Bruges artist Marcus Gheeraerts, the initiator and financier of the collection. For the text portion, his fellow citizen Eduard de Dene was responsible, who in his time was regarded as one of the most prominent rederijkers (rhetoricians/poets) of Flanders. The book linked the Aesopian fable with emblematic (emblem)ography and thus formed the basis of the so-called 'emblematic fable', a genre that experienced a brief flowering in the first half of the 17th century.
