Nikon D300 Digital reflex camera (DSLR)

The photos I take with the Nikon D300 keep turning out dark, even though there is plenty of light. It seems something is wrong with the exposure, but I can’t put my finger on exactly what it is. Sometimes the photo is reasonably well exposed with the flash. When I look through the viewfinder it’s also very dark. It is being sold without accessories; the battery has only been used to show the photo it took. So no charger or lenses either, only the body as shown in the photo.
