This artwork by Niki de Saint Phalle shows a colorful, imaginative world full of plants, animals and human figures. The large leaves and winding branches almost fill the entire image, making it feel as if you have stepped right into a special jungle. The black contour lines and bright colors, such as green, blue, orange and pink, give the work a cheerful and playful appearance. Among the plants you can discover all kinds of small details and figures, so you keep noticing something new. The piece has a dreamy, fairytale-like quality and shows how De Saint Phalle combines nature, people and imagination. Niki de Saint Phalle (1930–2002) was a French-American artist who became known for her colorful and striking works. She worked as a painter, sculptor and filmmaker, among other things. Especially her Nana’s, large and vividly colored sculptures of women, made her famous. In her art she often used cheerful colors and playful shapes, but behind that cheerful appearance she sometimes addressed serious topics, such as the position of women and social norms. One of her best-known projects is the Tarot Garden in Italy, a sculpture garden with enormous, colorful sculptures that clearly show how imaginative and recognizable her style is.
