With ‘Ruin and Exhilaration’, the Neue Nationalgalerie focuses on selected works from its collection of Classical Modernism that explore the Berlin of the 1910s and 1920s. These decades – shaped by the First World War and the Weimar Republic – constantly oscillated between extremes: excess and poverty, emancipation and extremism went hand in hand in the rapidly growing, cosmopolitan metropolis. With around 35 works in a variety of styles, the exhibition brings these ambivalences of Berlin at that time to life. Around 1910, Berlin was on the cusp of change: the city was growing rapidly and became one of the world’s most important centres of modernism. Technological progress in industry, construction and transport went hand in hand with the emergence of a new mass and leisure culture. On the journey from the conservative German Empire to the democratic Weimar Republic, the city’s intellectual climate also underwent a transformation, characterised by stark contrasts: liberating and frightening at the same time, chaotic and innovative, glamorous and ominous. The traumas of the First World War and political unrest cast a shadow over the so-called ‘Golden Twenties’. On many levels, the metropolis was in turmoil: freedom, consumerism and excess stood in stark contrast to growing poverty and unemployment. Even back then, Berlin was referred to as ‘Babylon’ – an allusion to the biblical ‘Babel’ – where people from all over the world came together and crossed moral boundaries. “Ruin and Exhilaration” explores, across three chapters, the coexistence of splendour and misery, rise and fall, in Berlin during the 1910s and 1920s. The exhibition opens with the painting “Potsdamer Platz” by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, who captured the fractured spirit of the times as early as 1914. After initially focusing on the dynamism of the growing metropolis in terms of architecture, transport and nightlife, the second part of the exhibition is devoted to the social misery and privations that largely characterised the everyday lives of the population. The third chapter highlights various facets of urban women, bringing to light their thirst for freedom, self-determination and queer lifestyles. The exhibition concludes with Lotte Laserstein’s melancholic work ‘Evening over Potsdam’ from 1930, which reflects the rise of National Socialism. The exhibition primarily features paintings and sculptures from the National Gallery’s collection, supplemented by an outstanding loan from the Landesbank Baden-Württemberg Collection at the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart: Otto Dix’s 1925 painting of the dancer Anita Berber. All the works have an explicit connection to the city of Berlin, whether through their subject matter or due to a biographical link to the artists. The exhibition illustrates the diversity of the era through works spanning such varied styles as Expressionism and New Objectivity. In addition, excerpts from Fritz Lang’s classic silent film Metropolis (1927) and Walther Ruttmann’s experimental documentary Berlin – A Symphony of the Metropolis (1927) are on display. At three audio stations, thematically related poems by Anita Berber, Mascha Kaléko and Erich Kästner are available for listening. Size: 59.5 x 84 cm.
