Historical background After the death of Duke Henry III of Brabant in 1261, the administration of the duchy fell under the regency of his widow, Aleydis of Burgundy. She took on the responsibility to protect the interests of her minor children and to ensure the continuity of the duchal authority. The thirteenth century was a period of growing economic development, in which cities like Leuven and Brussels rose to prominence as trading centers. Under Aleydis’s regency, the Brabantine dynastic position was continued until her son John I of Brabant seized the duchal power in 1267. John I would later become one of the best-known dukes in Brabant’s history. Coins from this transitional period form a tangible reminder of the political and economic developments within the medieval duchy. Obverse A walking lion, depicted within a heraldic shield. The lion is Brabant’s traditional heraldic animal and symbolizes the duchy’s power and independence. The strong relief gives this characteristic depiction a distinctive appearance. Reverse A Brabant cross with the letters in the four corners: B – A – S – T This letter combination is associated with the mint master or moneyer and forms a distinctive mark of this coin type. The cross reflects the important role of Christian faith within medieval society and minting tradition. Rarity and particulars This silver denier belongs to the rare Brabant coin issues from Aleydis of Burgundy’s regency. What makes the offered piece special is its beautiful, pronounced relief and the strong, well-executed strike. The historical depictions possess a characteristic depth and are presented attractively on both sides. The coin also has the distinctive look of a hand-struck medieval denier, with each individual strike bearing its own character. With a diameter of about 12 millimeters and a weight of approximately 0.53 to 0.54 grams, this is a small but historically meaningful silver piece.
