The most rare of the golden shields / Clinckaerts: the Philippus shield bearing the image of Philip the Good as guardian of Jacoba of Bavaria Front: seated ruler on a throne. Back: flowering cross in a fourfold partition. Delmonte Catalog 741. Jacoba, 1401, †1436, was the daughter of Duke William II (IV) of Bavaria-Straubing, Count of Holland. In 1415 she married Duke John of Touraine, the future Dauphin of France, who died in 1417. Jacoba was declared heir to Holland, Zeeland, Friesland, and Hainaut by her father. She married for a second time in 1418 to John, Duke of Brabant, and later separated from him. Her third marriage occurred in 1422 to Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, from whom she also separated. As a result, in 1428 she was forced by an agreement with Duke Philip of Burgundy to acknowledge him as her guardian and administrator of her counties. Her fourth marriage took place secretly in 1432 (made public only in 1434) to Francis of Borselen. In 1433 she was compelled to formally cede all her lands to Duke Philip. Clinckaerts, the designation for the golden shields of Holland, namely the Wilhelm Shield of William VI (1404-1417), the Johann Shield of John of Bavaria (1420-1425), and the Philippus Shield in the name of Philip the Good and Jacoba of Bavaria jointly (1428-1433). These three types were of the same form and weight, but of differing fineness and thus varied in value. The Wilhelm Shield is by far the most common, and the Philippus Shield the rarest.
