The Nausung mask is associated with the descendants of the hero Moro, the creator of the world, represented, among other things, by a serpent’s body and a human face. The Nausang mask, likely originally related to the tago mask from the Huon Gulf region on the other side of the Vitiaz Strait—which separates New Britain from the main island of New Guinea—plays an essential role in the initiation rituals for young boys.
