Theological Symbolism: The "Crystal Christ" (Christus Crystallus) In medieval Western Europe there existed a strong theological analogy between rock crystal and the figure of Jesus Christ. Theologians associated it directly with: • The Incarnation: Just as light passes through pure crystal without breaking or altering it, it was visually explained how God's divine light incarnated in the Virgin Mary while maintaining her virginity intact. • The Resurrection: By its transparent and luminous nature, the crystal reflected the metamorphosis of Christ's body into a glorious and resurrected being after the crucifixion. • Baptismal Water: For centuries it was erroneously believed that rock crystal was water from the rivers of Eden petrified by intense divine cold. This made it a metaphor for the water of baptism, the purification of the soul, and the conversion of hardened hearts.
