Native American Painted Rawhide Parfleche Envelope with Red Wool Trim

Native American, Western United States, Plains. An envelope-form parfleche case of thin rawhide. It folds into a flap-closed pouch with an inner compartment and ties shut with hide thongs. The front is painted with fields in green and blue that frame chains of yellow diamonds and red elongated triangles. The flap carries a red and green arc feathered with blue strokes. The reverse is plainer: blue-ruled panels, red hourglass motifs, and green hatching. Red wool trade cloth binds both sides, whipstitched with hide lacing, and a hide loop at the top let it hang. Parfleche pouches like this held personal goods, and special keepsakes. An old typewritten tag accompanying the piece names a “Mrs. Little Bird” as a former owner, though this cannot be verified.
