It is a purchase letter, drawn up at Muijden (Muiden) on 20 July 1798, in the fourth year of Batavian Freedom. Sold by A. Woutman, now in the name of Jan Jacobus Klaasen, river pilot, ‘Transfer of a House and Garden and Outbuilding and Yard situated within this city on the East side of the River Vecht, on the North corner of the Ossenmarkt’. The large manuscript from 1796 measures about 32 x 39 cm and is in neat, collectible condition, with the usual signs of aging (the photos are part of the description). It concerns a purchase letter, drawn up at Muijden (Muiden) on the 29th of April 1796, on behalf of the sheriff Claas Timmer and the alderman Christiaan Selck of the town Muijden. Christiaan Selck was an 18th-century blacksmith and prominent city administrator in Muiden. During the Batavian Republic (late 18th century) he was politically very active. He was among other things a member of the Municipal council (the then town government, comparable to aldermen or the city council) and a member of the Committee of General Welfare. In 1799 his term ended abruptly when it became clear that he had run off with the entire treasury of the Trekvaarten. He was forced to settle his debts, plunging his family (he was married to Geertje Beuker) into deep financial trouble. Content: The sale of a house and garden (between the parties Barend Verpompe and Pieter Buijtenweg), located on the west side of the Vecht river in the Stellingstraat, for the amount of 580 guilders.
