The work was, among others, harshly criticized by Rabbi Abraham ben David of Posquières, which, also in connection with controversies over its philosophical stance, led to the Maimonides controversy. Nevertheless, Maimonides is regarded as the supreme authority in the field of halakhic literature. It was received more favorably earlier by Albertus Magnus, and later by Meister Eckhart and Nikolaus of Kues. Spinoza also engages with it critically. In the 18th century Moses Mendelssohn and especially Salomon Maimon drew on Maimonides’ work to establish a modern Judaism in the spirit of the Enlightenment. Among the numerous thinkers influenced by Maimonides in the 19th and 20th centuries are, for example, Hermann Cohen with his neo-Kantian ethically infused reading, and Leo Strauss, whose Maimonides interpretation posited a hidden radical sense of the text and is now commonly viewed with critique.
