Mortlach 1995 "The Octave" (Duncan Taylor)—bottle number 1 of 89—is a powerful and exclusive Single Cask Scotch Whisky with a highly distinctive maturation profile. What makes this whisky unique? • The distillery (Mortlach): Mortlach is renowned for its robust, complex, and "meaty" spirit. This weighty character stems from a unique and intricate distillation process (distilled exactly 2.81 times). • The maturation ("The Octave"): After its initial maturation, independent bottler Duncan Taylor finishes the whisky for several months in an Octave cask (a small ex-sherry cask holding approximately 50 to 63 liters). Because the cask is so small, the liquid has intense contact with the wood. This accelerates flavor transfer, imparting a deep color and powerful layers of flavor to the whisky without the wood becoming overpowering. Flavor Profile and Characteristics Although this is a single cask release and every bottle in this limited edition (only 89 bottles worldwide from cask #799132) is unique, this 20-year-old Mortlach shares the following general flavor characteristics: • Color: Deep gold to amber, derived entirely naturally from the cask (no artificial coloring). • Nose (Aroma): Rich and full-bodied. Influences of dried fruit (raisins, plums), heavy oak notes, sweet malt, and subtle hints of spices and dark chocolate. • Palate (Taste): Powerful and oily in the mouth, owing to its cask strength (52.4% ABV). You taste the characteristic, savory, and full-bodied nature of Mortlach combined with the sweet and spicy influences of the sherry octave cask: notes of candied fruit, honey, roasted nuts, and warm winter spices. • Finish: Long, warming, and complex, with lingering notes of sweet fruit, oak spices, and a hint of leather or tobacco. It is a sought-after item for collectors and enthusiasts alike, thanks to its extremely limited production run and the unique combination of a robust Speyside malt with intensive wood maturation.
