Morlet Lombard (XX) - Still Life with Palm

Large early 20th-century oil painting on canvas, signed “Morlet Lombard” in the lower right corner. The composition combines an elaborate still life with a classical figurative background. In the foreground are a large blue ceramic vessel containing a palm-like plant, a silver-coloured ewer and an arrangement of pink, red and cream roses. Behind the still life is a painted classical scene featuring partially nude figures, creating an unusual combination of decorative still-life painting and figurative imagery. The work is executed on a large canvas and presented in an imposing gilt wooden frame. Its substantial dimensions and richly layered composition give the painting a strong decorative presence. The painting is hand-signed “Morlet Lombard” at the lower right. The signature is clearly visible in the detailed photographs. At present, the artist has not been conclusively identified, and the work is therefore offered on the basis of the visible signature without further attribution. The reverse shows the original canvas and wooden stretcher construction. An older dealer, framer or restorer's label is attached to the upper section of the reverse. The exact origin of this label has not yet been established. The painting shows age-related wear. The reverse of the canvas shows areas of discolouration and staining. The gilt frame also shows normal age-related wear and marks. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.
