Moabit (XX-XXI) - Currency Unavailable

MOABIT – US$1: "Currency Unavailable" (1/1) "This currency is not available." What if a banknote deregisters itself? In this unique money-art tweet from Moabit — Spain’s leading currency artist — the portrait list of the dollar bill is replaced by a black block with a pixelated 8-bit smiley: sad, like an error message from the early days of computing. Where George Washington should be, now stands the icon of a generation that still knows money mainly as a number on a screen. Moabit works in the tradition of Banksy and KAWS, but with a canvas that no one else dares: the authentic dollar bill itself. His works — painted with acrylic, spray paint, and markers — are sought after by collectors of banknote art, Disney and cartoon fans, and the crypto community. About his work he says: "I paint on dollars because although money is currency, by painting on it, it becomes a commodity — poking fun at the prestige of greed and even the art world itself." This piece sums up that mission in one image: the legal tender that collectively declares it to be out of stock. A sharp, minimalist wink to the dematerialization of money, the crypto hype and the endless "not available" culture of the digital era. Since 2018 Moabit has grown into one of Spain’s most auctioned artists, with his own recurring auction on Catawiki ("The Art of Moabit") and a global collector base. This is a chance to acquire a 1/1 from his studio."
