Rare French Table Linen in a luminous cobalt-like blue — With 12 Matching Napkins In all my years of working with French antique linen, I have rarely encountered a set as intriguing and visually striking as this one. Made from a strong, crisp voile cotton, this exceptional table linen is distinguished by its remarkable colour: a clear, luminous, almost electric blue, with a richness that brings to mind the beautiful intensity of cobalt blue. It is a colour that immediately catches the eye, quite unlike the more familiar shades one encounters in traditional French table linen. The set comprises the tablecloth and 12 matching napkins, all sharing this wonderfully vivid blue. Its provenance is equally charming. According to the lady from whom I acquired it, the linen was originally given as a wedding present to her parents. It was subsequently tucked away in a drawer of one of their walnut armoires, where it remained, forgotten and undisturbed, since the 1950s. Quite remarkably, this appears to be the very first time the linen has seen the light of day since then. It has waited patiently for more than seven decades to be rediscovered and appreciated once again. I felt that such an unusual piece deserved to be presented in a setting worthy of its colour. I therefore dressed the table entirely in blue faience, complemented by carefully chosen matching accessories and fresh dahlias gathered from the garden. The result was a harmonious composition that allows the extraordinary blue to take centre stage. Yet this linen is not merely a beautiful decorative piece. It is a little fragment of domestic history, carrying with it the memory of a wedding, a family home and a walnut armoire in which it lay untouched for generations. It now deserves a new chapter, finding its way into the hands of someone who will appreciate its rarity, its remarkable colour and the opportunity to give it a new life. I have included a variety of photographs, both of the fully dressed table and of the table linen presented on its own with all 12 matching napkins, allowing the beauty and character of this unusual set to be appreciated in detail.
