In the foreground, a young woman in a light blue dress leans toward a shrub to pick a rose, while the second figure, seated by a balustrade, watches the scene. The composition is built through an balanced relationship between figure, light, and vegetation. The color contrast is particularly successful: the bright blue of the young woman’s dress, the rosy tones of the seated figure, and the deep greens of the garden. The loose, atmospheric brushwork and the interest in an elegant bourgeois everyday life place the work in the climate of Italian painting from the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The work is proposed for attribution to Michele Tedesco (1834–1917), a Lucanian painter trained in Naples, who was active in important European contexts. The attribution naturally requires confirmation through direct examination and comparison with documented works by the artist. Frame The painting is presented within an important gilded wooden frame, richly worked with a succession of ornamental leaf motifs, beading, and geometric bands. The frame shows widespread signs of time, small abrasions, losses and irregular gilding, consistent with its age and function, and contributes effectively to the historicized presentation of the work.
