Michel Bermingham - Statuts des docteurs-regens - 1754

BERMINGHAM, MICHEL. — TRANSLATION OF THE STATUTES OF THE DOCTORS-REGENTS OF THE FACULTY OF MEDICINE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PARIS (PARIS, DEPOILLY & PISSOT, 1754, WITH FRONTISPIECE ENGRAVED). Paris: Depoilly & Pissot, 1754. in-12mo. Full contemporary calf, spine with raised cords ornamented. Original edition of the French translation of the regulations of the most illustrious medical institution of the kingdom under Louis XV. Translated by Michel Bermingham, a celebrated sworn surgeon of Paris, this work aimed to render accessible in the vulgar tongue the privileges, duties, ethical rules, licensing and aggregation conditions of the doctors of the University of Paris. The work also contains a historical recall on the schools of medicine since the 15th century (1471), the Jardin du Roi and comparative elements with the College of Medicine of London. The copy opens with a remarkable frontispiece engraving representing the rocaille cartouche with the arms of the Faculty. Copy preserved in its XVIIIth-century binding, full marbled calf. Spine with raised cords ornamented with fleurons and gilded compartments. Original title piece in red morocco perfectly legible. The leather shows rubbing and handling epidermations, wear to the heads and corners slightly worn. Structure of perfect solidity. Very healthy interior on fine period laid paper. Complete with the large copper frontispiece, the headbands, the tailpiece, and the table of contents. Michel Bermingham came from the émigration of the ‘Wild Geese’ Irish-Catholics settled in France. Becoming sworn surgeon in Paris and member of the Royal Society of London, he defied the austere tradition of the Faculty — which required Latin for all internal affairs — by publishing the statutes of the doctors in French to inform the general public and practitioners!
