MGA - G. Mazzotti Albissola - Guseppe Mazzotti - Ashtray - Ceramic

Unusual ceramic ashtray produced by the prestigious ceramic manufactory of Albisola MGA founded in 1903 by Giuseppe Bausin Mazzotti. Brand G. Mazzotti on the back used between 1959 and 1988. There are many Albisola ceramicists, but perhaps no other family has marked the more recent history of this art like the Mazzottis. In 1903, in fact, Giuseppe (“Bausin”) Mazzotti opened a ceramic workshop inside the picturesque “Pozzo Garitta” of Albissola Marina, later split with a second location in Albisola Superiore, and then entirely moved in 1934-35 to the new factory at the mouth of the Sansobbia, where one can still see it today. Protagonists of this evolution, besides the founder Giuseppe, are his sons Tullio and Torido, who now collaborate with the “Bausin.” The imaginative Tullio also knew Marinetti, with whom he drafted in 1938 the Manifesto of Ceramics and Aeroceramics, and he was awarded the nickname “Tullio d’Albisola” by the illustrious friend. His futurist-inspired ceramics are splendid, as are those drawn by the Bulgarian Nicolaj Diulgheroff, an architect, painter, and highly successful advertiser. Diulgheroff, among other things, designed the Mazzotti house (one of the few concrete examples of Futurist architecture), also thanks to Tullio’s suggestions. Torido, instead, designed the new furnaces and, together with Diulgheroff, conceived a new wing of the building toward the Sansobbia. It has already been said of the artistic fervor of postwar Albisola, when many of the mentioned artists (and many others) frequent the Mazzotti kilns, before gathering to讨论 at the historic “Bar Testa” on the seafront. These are also the years of the separation between Giuseppe’s heirs (who died in 1944), who since 1959 chose to distinguish their artistic and professional paths: Tullio and sister Vittoria on one side, Torido on the other. And even today the area between the two Albisoles, from which the famous “Lungomare degli artisti” (of course in ceramic…) is visible, realized in 1963 between Via Aurelia and the beach (part of a broader distributed Museum) shows the “co-presence” of the two distinct activities, currently in the hands of younger generations. It concerns the “Ceramiche Mazzotti,” a place where, in addition to a production of ceramics of the highest quality, the heirs Esa Mazzotti and Giovanni Rossello preserve the memory of Tullio d’Albisola, whose works they hold the rights to; and the “Fabbrica Ceramiche Giuseppe Mazzotti 1903,” about which, here, I intend to speak more extensively. And not so much out of preference for one workshop over the other, but because I recently visited this studio several times, and spoke with its owner; in the future I hope to do the same with the other branch of the family. Dimensions: 18x9 cm Perfect condition.
