Memorabilia collection - Matryoshka dolls - Matrioshka / Semenov

Monumental Matryoshka Collection | 24 Sets, 145 Dolls… yes, a full 145 little figures. From miniatures of about 1 cm to an impressive Soviet matryoshka of 44.5 cm!!! Some collections deserve a display cabinet. This one deserves an entire wall. An extraordinarily large and colorful collection of matryoshkas, with original Soviet pieces, traditional Russian folk art, religious scenes and surprising thematic variations. From refined hand-painted folkloric ladies and bright floral motifs to Orthodox icons, warriors, footballers and even pandas. Each set tells a different story. A collection with character, history and a number of particularly interesting curiosities. The showpiece: 18 figures, almost half a meter tall The absolute standout is a monumental matryoshka from the former Soviet Union. With its impressive height of 44.5 cm, a weight of no less than 3,074 grams and 18 nesting dolls, this is an exceptional specimen. The largest doll houses another 17 smaller ones. The smallest measures only about 1 cm. From almost half a meter to a miniature that barely fits between two fingers. A fascinating example of traditional woodturning and craftsmanship. The large doll is finished in natural wood, with graceful rose motifs, refined black line drawings, subtle color accents and a glossy finish. Notable is the original ‘Made in USSR’ label on the underside. This confirms the Soviet provenance of this set. The piece is dated to around the 1960s. It is precisely this combination of an exceptional size, the 18 figures and the historical provenance label that makes this set one of the most important parts of the collection. Religious art and ancient traditions Another special part is the seven-piece matryoshka set with Orthodox iconography. The dolls depict religious scenes, including Mary with child, saints and Saint George on horseback. The restrained earth tones, religious paintings and gold accents give this series a completely different look from the traditional, exuberantly colored Russian dolls. A fascinating combination of folk art and religious imagery. The folkloric warriors also deserve attention. With their silver helmets, shield and spear, they form an unusual and particularly decorative variant within the collection. From traditional folk art to unexpected themes The collection beautifully shows how versatile the matryoshka has become over the years. You will find, among others: * Traditional Russian ladies with floral dresses and headscarves. * Delicately painted series with strawberries, roses and lace motifs. * Folkloric figures in traditional dress. * A religious series with Orthodox icons. * Warriors with helmet, spear and shield. * Football figures with characteristic portraits. * A charming five-piece panda series. * Figurative dolls with striking geometric and folkloric decorations. * Various versions with gold details, floral motifs and miniature decorations. The contrast between traditional Soviet art and later playful themes makes this collection especially appealing. Historical origin and original markings The collection includes pieces from different decades, from about the 1960s to the present day. Some come from the Soviet period. Other sets represent later developments within the Russian matryoshka tradition and international thematic variations. Several pieces have interesting provenance details. Besides the original ‘Made in USSR’ label on the largest set, there is a factory label referring to Semjonov in the Russian region of Nizhny Novgorod. This is one of the historical production centers of Russian matryoshkas. Another piece bears the handwritten place name Sergiev Posad, with the year 1996. These historical details give the collection extra character and are of interest to enthusiasts of traditional Russian wood art and Soviet collectible items. A complete collection with presence What sets this collection apart is its size and the remarkable variety of versions. No fewer than 145 dolls, spread across 24 different sets. Each with its own painting style, size and subject. From refined miniatures to monumental wooden figures. From restrained religious art to cheerful, almost theatrical paintings. A fantastic collection for a lover of Russian folk art, a collector of Soviet objects, or someone who enjoys a bold interior. Imagine these 24 sets along a long wall shelf, in a large display cabinet, in an eclectic interior or as a colorful presentation in a gallery or creative studio. And with the holidays approaching this is, of course, an exceptionally original gift. Unpacking 145 dolls. The recipient will be busy for a while.
