Meissen - Johann Joachim Kaendler - Gravy boat - Sauce...

Meissen – Johann Joachim Kaendler – Blue Onion sauce boat with underplate – Neuer Ausschnitt – 19th century A particularly antique specimen from the famous German porcelain factory Meissen: a generous double-sided sauce boat with fixed underplate, executed in the classic blue-and-white Zwiebelmuster and refined with hand-painted gold accents. The sauce boat is made in the historic Meissen service form Neuer Ausschnitt, the design of which is attributed to the important Meissen modeller and designer Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706–1775). The first pieces of this service appeared around 1745. Kaendler is among the most important designers in Meissen’s history and largely determined the development of European porcelain in the 18th century. Meissen – Neuer Ausschnitt and Johann Joachim Kaendler The Zwiebelmuster, internationally also known as Blue Onion, is one of Meissen’s most recognizable decors and was developed in 1731. The decor was inspired by East Asian porcelain. Despite the later name Zwiebelmuster – literally onion pattern – the decoration consists of stylized flowers, leaves and fruits. The graceful Neuer Ausschnitt form is particularly elegant on this sauce boat. The bowl has two opposite pouring spouts and two openwork handles, and forms a single unit with the fixed underplate. The serrated outlines are finished with fine gold rims, which provide an elegant contrast to the deep cobalt-blue underglaze decor. On the underside lies the characteristic blue crossed swords mark of Meissen. The mark’s execution fits within the so-called Knaufschwerter period. In addition, there are several historical production markings, including a painted blue number 3, an impressed 2, and the impressed number 108. The number 108 is not intended to be read as a year; such impressed figures were used in historic Meissen production for internal production and form-related markings. Based on the sword mark, the form and documented comparison pieces, this specimen can be reasonably dated to the second half of the 19th century. Similar Meissen objects in Neuer Ausschnitt with Zwiebelmuster and gold edge are dated around 1860–1888. This period is plausible for this piece, but an exact production year cannot be determined with certainty from the markings present. The sword mark shows no visible wear marks over the mark in the available photos, which is consistent with a first-rate piece (1. Wahl). With its substantial dimensions of 25.5 cm long × 18 cm wide × 9.0 cm high and a weight of 709 grams, this is a substantial antique Meissen porcelain piece. The combination of Kaendler’s historic Neuer Ausschnitt form, the famous Zwiebelmuster, refined gold decoration, and the 19th-century execution make it an attractive collectible and a particularly decorative item for enthusiasts of historic European porcelain. Carefully view the photos and macro shots for a good impression of the decoration, the gold finish, the Meissen sword mark, additional production marks, and the condition of this antique object.
